The news of an increment in the NYSC allowance (AKA allawee) has been brought to the front burner. In this post, we will bring you the latest updates on the NYSC federal allowance increment. Also we will try to analyze when the NYSC allawee will be paid.
Note that as a major step in the right direction, the Corps has already approved between a 20 percent and 40 percent increase in other allowances so far. The NYSC via the Scheme’s Director, Press and Publications Mrs Adenike Adeyemi announced the increase in transport allowance from N1,500 to N1,800 and local allowance from 1,000 to 1,400 Naira. We know this may sound small, but it’s a huge plus.

Equally important, the National Youth Service Corps Director General, Suleiman Kazaure dropped some hints sometime ago. The DG while fielding questions at the Kusala Dam orientation camp in Kano revealed that efforts at getting an increment is yielding positive results. In his words, the Corps boss said:
“OUR EFFORTS TO ENSURE THAT THE MONTHLY ALLOWANCE OF THE CORPS MEMBERS IS INCREASED HAVE YIELDED A VERY GOOD RESULT FOLLOWING SERIES OF DISCUSSION WITH THE MINISTER OF LABOUR AND PRODUCTIVITY, CHRIS NGIGE”.
“THE N18,800 PAID TO CORPS MEMBERS IS GROSSLY INADEQUATE TO CATER FOR THEIR NEEDS DURING THE MANDATORY ONE YEAR SERVICE TO THE NATION.
Before going any further, I’d like to clear the air on your expectations. While we hope for an increment, the probability of getting it in 2018 is very slim. According to the official sources, any change in the NYSC allowance is highly dependent on the federal minimum wage. There are clamors for a review of the 19,000 naira minimum wage championed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). However, in a careful assessment of the 2018 budget, we noticed there is no provision for such.
